Abstract

The purpose of this study is to assess the accuracy of the sinus septa observation in the panoramic radiograph. This
study is conducted on 600 maxillary sinuses of the 300 patients who were taken Cone beam CT(CBCT) and panoramic
radiograph in the department of oral & maxillofacial radiology of Chosun dental hospital from 2008.1. to 2009. 6. General
dentist analysed the sinus septa in the panoramic radiograph. Of 600 maxillary sinuses, total 130(21.7%) sinuses with at least one septum were observed in CBCT, 112(18.7%) sinuses in panoramic radiograph. There were 27 sinuses with false positive septa, 45 sinuses with false negative septa, and 85 sinuses with positive septa in the panoramic radiograph. Thus, of the 130 sinuses with at least one septum, only the 85 were accurate and the rate was 65%. As it is difficult to differentiate the sinus septa exactly in the panoramic radiograph, the use of Cone beam CT is recommended to find out precise anatomic structure so as to reduce the complication in the maxillary sinus floor elevation surgery.
